The Mentorship Accelerator: launching a new program for equity, diversity and inclusion
Montréal, Quebec, 25 September 2019 - Mentorat Québec is launching the Mentorship Accelerator, a new equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) program that will operate in predominantly male sectors in Quebec. Over the next year, Mentorat Québec’s team will support organizations wishing to implement a mentorship program to help recruit and retain a diverse workforce. The goal of the project is to better integrate women and under-represented groups in the labour market by creating mentorship programs in predominantly male sectors of the economy. The Mentorship Accelerator is an initiative supported by the Secrétariat de la condition féminine du Québec and is part of the Government of Québec’s 2018-2023 National Workforce Strategy.
At a time when Quebec is facing a serious shortage of labour, it is increasingly important to ensure that jobs are filled by skilled, motivated workers. The Mentorship Accelerator supports businesses and organizations of all sizes by providing them with the expertise and tools to implement a mentorship program in the workplace.
The 2019-2020 edition of the Mentorship Accelerator brings together an inaugural cohort of three organizations that will benefit from the support of Mentorat Québec: Mila, the Quebec Artificial Intelligence Institute; the Fin-ML Network for Machine Learning in Finance; and the Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec (OIQ). The Accelerator’s programs will be advised by such EDI experts as the Regroupement des Groupes de Femmes de la région de la Capitale-Nationale (RGF-CN) and the Chaire de leadership en enseignement – Femmes et organisations de l’Université Laval.
An exceptional program for equity, diversity and inclusion
In addition to becoming members of Mentorat Quebec, participating organizations can count on the Mentorship Accelerator to furnish them with a range of services and tools: mentor-mentee trainings, tailored networking events, and A-to-Z support for their program.
As for the Accelerator’s advisors, the RGF-CN will act as an expert on the status of women, helping Mentorat Québec adapt its mentorship tools to the needs and realities of female personnel, while the Chaire de leadership en enseignement at Laval University, led by Professor Sophie Brière, will conduct a scientific evaluation of each mentoring program and the Accelerator as a whole. In exchange for this support, the Accelerator’s clients will contribute to research, knowledge-sharing, and outreach activities, such as Mentorship Month in January 2020.
"Today is a great day for Mentorat Québec, which has put tremendous effort into setting up the Mentorship Accelerator, a program that meets critical needs in the workplace. We are proud to kick off this project, which will help develop a culture of mentoring in Quebec while bolstering the integration of diversity into the job market. Today's announcement also reinforces the Government of Quebec's trust in Mentorat Québec and its commitment to the value of mentorship. "
- Marianne Lefebvre, President of Mentorat Québec
"Just like women working in other male-dominated industries, women in technology are often swimming against the current. We are confronted with invisible and exhausting obstacles. Without organizational support, the resilience of many women reaches a breaking point. Mentorship is a no-regrets cornerstone of any diversity initiative and I am excited to be working with Mentorat Québec's Mentorship Accelerator to set up the first mentoring program for under-represented groups at Mila. "
- Valérie Pisano, President and CEO of Mila
“We know that economic empowerment is key to collective prosperity, which is why the Québec government is proud to contribute $90 400 to Mentorat Québec's Mentorship Accelerator."
- Isabelle Charest, Minister for Education and
Minister Responsible for the Status of Women
